Kelantan Delights @ Sooka Sentral

We had our very first Tastebuddies gathering by Nuffnang over the weekend at Kelantan Delights in Sooka Sentral. It is not that easy to get a decent Kelantanese cuisine in KL/PJ area. So, I was excited when I found out that our first get together would be in a Kelantanese restaurant.

While waiting for everyone to arrive and the dishes to be served, we were offered with some chilled lemongrass drinks to quench our thirst.

It was a perfect beverage to sip on in a hot sunny Sunday afternoon - slightly sweetened with the aroma of lemongrass to make you feel refreshing. We were all busy snapping and chatting away while waiting for our FOOD!!!! LOL!!!

I was super excited to try the food after going through the menu:

Before our appetizer was served, we had a brief but insightful introduction of history behind the Kelantanese cuisine by the staff of Kelantan Delights - who were all very friendly.

To kickstart our appetite, we were served with 2 different appetizers:

1. Sirih Daun Kaduk

Daun sirih is called "Betel" in English. The leaf was wrapped with fried popiah skin to give it a crunchy texture. Inside the leaf was filled with ginger, cili padi, roasted coconut, roasted peanuts, dried shrimp and the restaurant special sauce. The ginger and cili padi wasn't too spicy, but just nice to spiced-up your appetite for next course. I was loving this dish that I had 2 of them!! *guilty*

2. Tomyam Kelapa Muda

Tomyam has always been my top favorite, and I love them to be spicy! Our tomyam was served in shot glasses with prawn and coconut meat on a stick and garnished with coriander. Usually, they will serve it in coconut shell. The shotglass worked for me. The soup was flavorful, but for my personal tastebud I would loved it to be a little bit more spicier.

I couldn't wait to try out my main course, after having delicious appetizers.

For the main course, we have 4 choices, and they were being served in 2 rounds:

1. Nasi Kerabu Ayam Percik

Nasi Kerabu means rice salad and there's a variety of nasi kerabu in Kelantan. The rice we had was blue in color, which was a coloring from Blue Bell flower. It was served with ayam percik and ulam by the side with salted egg and fish crackers. A ayam percik is "wood-fire broiled chicken dressed with sweet coconut gravy" and ulam is a local term for raw vegetables. The gravy was aromatic and you can taste the coconut in it; the chicken breast I had was succulent and goes very well with the gravy on top of it. I couldn't stop myself from eating it, although the portion was a little too big for me.

2. Nasi Dagang Gulai Ikan

Nasi Dagang literally means trading rice, and it usually comes with its different components which can be combined to suit the diner's taste. The dish was served with gulai ikan tongkol (mackerel tuna), acar timun (pickled cucumber) and egg. Unfortunately, I did not try this dish, so I couldn't comment much on it. However, it smelled really really good when the waiters brought it to our table.

3. Nasi Tumpang

This was my 2nd time having nasi tumpang, and I totally love their version. There will be different layering of food inside the rice. The first layer was filled shredded egg; the second was filled with chicken floss and prawn sambal; and at the bottom of the rice was gulai ikan tongkol. Traditionally, the farmers in Kelantan will just take the rice out to the field and have it as their breakfast, lunch and dinner. In Kelantan Delights, they've added in a piece of fried chicken by the side. It was fun eating this dish. Every layer of the rice brings different flavors, as and when you dig into the rice. We were informed that due to the long hours of making a nasi tumpang (3 hours), the restaurant could only make less than 20 of these in a day. So people, go early and snatch if before others do! LOL!!

3. Laksam

This was also my 2nd time having laksam. The gravy was made of fish puree and santan (coconut milk), which was absolutely flavorful. The raw vegetables added texture into the dish while the sambal belacan give the dish a little spiciness.

After tasting their main course, I was stuffed with food and I could feel my sleepiness hitting me like a tidal wave. LOL! But, I'm still looking forward for the desserts, as they have some very unique names - Lompat Tikam and Ketupat Sotong

Lompat Tikam - rice cake (pandan), pulut merah (red glutinous rice) with santan (coconut milk) and gula melaka (palm sugar). The rice cake was soft and kinda tasteless by itself, but was perfect to go with the coconut milk and palm sugar. The pulut merah was another of my favorite of that afternoon. It has a little chewy texture and goes very well with the sweetness of the palm sugar.

Ketupat Sotong - This was a dish that kept us guessing the whole afternoon - how does it look like? how does it taste? As the name suggested, it's a squid stuffed with rice. Personally, it has a very special and unique taste, and I'd say a little bit "challenging" for my palate. It tasted totally like squid but instead of savory, it was sweet.

All in all, I'd say this was a pleasant experience in the restaurant. In fact, I'm actually contemplating of visiting the restaurant again!

Bonsoir... Bistro a Table

It has been quite a loooooooong time since I've last posted my blog. Have been busy with my work, but still it did not stop me from hunting for food. ^^

Bistro a Table... it started off with my researching for new restaurants in Petaling Jaya area. I wanted to try different cuisine, so I tried my luck hunting for French food in PJ area. Who would have know, I found it! Bistro a Table is located in Seksyen 17. For those of you who know where Decanter is, the restaurant is located just behind it; and for those who don't, please refer to the address listed at the very bottom of this blog. ^_^

The menu is simple, and you can go through their menu from entree to desserts at one glance. I kinda like it, for me, this really saved me the hassle of flipping through the menu deciding what I wanted to order for the night. Same as the menu layout, the interior design is also simple. I tried to take a few pictures of the restaurant but I was kinda occupied by my dinner.

Some bread and butter was served before the our entree.

My brother and I ordered their escargot as our entree. I've always preferred my escargot to be baked with cheese and herbs. In Bistro a Table, they prepared their escargot with clarified butter. It came in three cute little egg-sized cup, with pastries on it and bread by the side. The pastries on top of the cup was thin enough that you could just break it easily. The escargot was prepared in clarified butter, which I was kinda worry initially, that it will be too oily due to all the butter. How wrong could I have been! I have a new found love! LOL!!! The butter was not too oily (at least, my personal opinion) and has the right saltiness in it, it totally goes well with the bread by the side - that, if you are a bread and butter kind of person.

p/s: I tried taking some nice pictures of it...but epic failure of the pic! Sowiee~~~~>.<

I had their Shredded Duck Confit with Pasta. I was really looking forward for some delicous hand-made pasta, but ended up kinda disappointed, as the pasta tasted like a ready-made ones. Having said so, the duck wasn't dry and I wouldn't mind going back ordering this dish.

My brother had their  Scallop wrapped with Pasta. I had high hopes for this dish too, as I'm a big lover for scallops! Sadly, I had a slight disappointment in this dish too. Sames goes to the pasta, it tasted like ready-made ones, and the scallops really tasted like frozen scallops. On the other hand, the broth was really deliciously good!! I think I ended up finished the entire broth in the plate.

Overall, I wouldn't say that the experience was a total disaster. There were some hits and misses, but for me, the overall experience is very important too and I'll definitely wouldn't mind going back there to dine again. I would like to try out other dishes on their menu.

p/s: not a big wine lover (apart from ice wine), so we've each ordered some beers for the night. I know... these does not pair up nicely with the food! But hey, if your palate agress with the pairing, who cares! LOL!!!

Tickling My Tastebuds

Hola senor and senorita! How you boys and girls doing? It is almost towards the end of the weekday, and yes I know today is only Thursday, but you can't blame a girl for wanting her Thurdays and Fridays to pass by faster! Hehehehe...Anyway, I just wanted to share a nice cosy place with you boys and girls out there, a nice little place named Bon Bon's Bakery and Cafe. It is located in Damansara Jaya, Petaling Jaya. If any of you people know where is KDU main campus in PJ, or the old Atria Shopping Complex, the cafe is located very near there. Is somewhat easy to find, but with all the constructions going on at the area, makes it hard to find.

The cafe operates from Monday to Saturday (not quite sure the exact time). The cafe operate 5 days a week (Monday to Tuesday, and Thursday to Sunday) from 7:30am, and they are close on Wednesday and Sunday. **P/S: Thx to a kind-hearted soul who provided with this update ^_^

I used to go there for their breakfast, and will always order to their American Big Breakfast. It is a hearty breakfast that comes with toast, baked beans, sausages, ham, and egg (your choice of sunny-side up or omelette); fresh fruit juice and coffee or tea of your choice. They have other ligher breakfast such as french toast, sandwiches and many more. For the non-morning folks out there, don't worry! They serve quite an extensive list of lunch menu too! From western to Asian/Local food, they have chicken chopped (my all time favourite would be their honey mustard chicken ^^) to spaghetti and Asam Laksa. Apart from their day to day list, they would have a daily special menu. One of my favourite from their daily special is their "Mee Rebus", which is yellow egg noodles cook with spicy slightly sweet curry-like gravy. The gravy is normally made of potatoes, curry powder and many more; but most of the time you can't really taste the sweetness of the potatoes in the gravy but you end up getting a bowl of noodles soaked in a diluted yellow soup. Yucks!
Mee Rebus

In Bon Bon's they have a serious quality control in everything they serve. The food will be personally cooked or baked by their pretty lady boss. Hence, you can really taste the sweetness of the potato and aromatic curry in their well-seasoned gravy. The noodles are served with chicken and fried beancurd, hard-boiled egg and garnish with dried shrimp and shallots. They also serve it with half a lime on the side, so that you can squeeze in some lime to add some acidity into the dish and bring out the flavors even more. The gravy was so aromatic and tasty, that I finished the entire plate and was tempted to lick all the gravy!

Tiramisu with Whisky
Besides their main dishes, their desserts is always a must have for me. I seriously love their dessert. As usual, I had their Tiramisu cake. I believe that when it comes to Tiramisu, many people have different preferences. Some people like their Tiramisu to be made of short bread; some like theirs to be made with alcohol and some don't. I prefer my Tiramisu WITH alcohol! LOL! Bon Bon make a killer Tiramisu, if you ask me, but hey...palates are subjective! If you like your Tiramisu to be filled with aromatic alcohol then you are at the right place. Their Tiramisu cakes are light and moist in the middle even though with all the cream, and they actually add in a whole bottle of whisky into making the cake, but the alcohol is not too over-whelming. To add in some textures, they make the base of their cake using digestive biscuits, which make the cake extra yummy!

To add on to my cake, I had their Banana Crumble with Vanilla Ice Cream, which is also another satisfying dessert to end your whole meal. They warm up the banana crumble (which I believe I tasted a hint of cinnamon) for us and paired it with cold vanilla ice cream. With every mouthful, I could taste the sweetness of banana that goes so well with cinnamon. For those that don't really fancy cinnamon, fred not! The taste of cinnamon was not over-powering, but it had the right amount that make you go spoon after spoon of the crumble.

Another "Steak" out at Jake's Charbroil Steak

I have been craving for a good steak for months, so when my brother suggested that we bring our cousin sister to Jake's, I happily agreed! It was raining heavily (or scarily, due to the thunder and lightning...), but it did not stop me from braving myself to the restaurant. A girl will do almost anything for her steak! LOL!!! =p

I've posted obout this place previously but did not get much of the pictures back then. So, this post will mostly consist of pictures.

pick your cut peeps ^^

waiting patiently *ehem* for my escargot

For starter, we were torn between escargot and oxtail soup. At last, we ended up with their Baked Escargot with Herbs and Garlic .

I've tried very hard to take some nice pictures of the snail, but I must say, it really is super difficult to take them! I strongly believe this is due to my poor photography skill. =p

We've also ordered their Beef Nachos for our second starter. The nachos was quite good, but I think the cillies by the side will be too spicy for some. Also, the cillies kinda reminded me of the sambal in nasi lemak. But, the cheese on top of the nachos was really gooey-ly good!

Beef Nachos

After the starter, I couldn't wait for them to serve my main course - Steak, of course!! As usual, I love my steak to be done medium rare. I've been disappointed way too many times when ordering steak elsewhere. Once I hurt the root of my teeth due to excessive chewing on the cupboard-tough steak, and that really freaked me out till I did not have any steak for quite a long time. There was a time when I cut into the meat, the blood just kept flowing out, and my steak was kinda soaked in a bloody gravy. The steak was either still rare or the chef just did not let it rest enough.

Finally, they served the steak. I was practiclly drooling on the meat when the waiter brought them over to our table. After sprinkled some freshly grind black pepper, I eargerly cut into my 200gm Aged Tenderloin done medium rare. There, in the middle, is the lovely pinkish color meat. Ahhhh~~~~~ that's one of a few heavenly sight for me. My steak was perfectly done will medium rare and was tender. The baked potato by the side was nice too, with sour cream and grounded beef bacon.

Perfect medium rare ^^

My brother order the same cut as me, but his was cooked till medium. My cousin sister order a 650gm T-Bone well done. It was huge when they served the T-bone.

650gm T-Bone

To complete our meal, we ordered Nut Brittle as our dessert. I'm not a big fan of caremel so the dessert was ok for me, but both my brother and cousin sister love it.

There it was, my lovely and satisfying Thursday rainy night! ^^

P/S: "MR" = Medium Rare ........... or...... "Mr." (hm...wonder was it a male cow on my plate =p )

Trilogy Rosehip Oil Antioxidant+

I have been suffering from acne and the scars they left behind for years! I've tried all sorts of method (except surgery and laser) just to get rid of them - regular facials, fruit acid treatment, drinking collagen/beauty drinks and tons of money dumped into skin care products!! After all these trials and errors, I'll agree that my acne scars do heal a lot compare to last time. However, the healing process kinda stop or slow down, I feel. Why I said so? That's because whenever I have acne popping on my face, it will leave a red scarring mark on my face (reminding me that it was there before T____T), and it will take more then a month to heal. Sometimes it just faded by a bit and just stayed there for eternity!

Few weeks ago I was doing my usual research on acne scars on the internet, and I came across Trilogy products. I've seen this brand and their products before in pharmacies and organic skin care outlets, but I did not check them out further. Now, after reading all the comments and reviews on the internet about Trilogy, I'm kicking myself real hard! All the reviews online got me curious on their rosehip oil products - Trilogy Rosehip Oil Antioxidant+.

I've heard of the healing abilities of rosehip oil quite some time ago, but wasn't excited to try them because my face condition. Let me explain a bit on this. I have combination oily skin + acne problem + sensitive skin (my face turns red or acnes will start coming out the second I use the wrong products). Hence, like a lot other girls (I believe), I was kinda skeptic on putting oil on my face. Personally, I felt it was gonna be oil on top on oil *ewwwww*!!! However, I'm a converted now!

What Trilogy says:

"Certified organic and 100% natural, Rosehip Oil Antioxidant+ combines nature’s most powerful skin restoring and skin protecting properties in a unique and advanced formulation, RosapeneTM.
Rosapene is a red berry seed oil blend, which provides daily antioxidant protection and intensive nourishment to replenish softness and elasticity for healthier, younger looking skin.

Potent super antioxidants lycopene from Tomato and phytosterol from Acai help protect skin from premature ageing caused by environmental free radical damage. Nourishing essential fatty acids (Omegas 3 and 6) from Cranberry and Rosehip moisturise and renew. Mineral and vitamin rich Oat extract provides a soothing and luxurious feel that glides on the skin.

Ideal for all skin types, massage 2-3 drops into cleansed skin on face, neck and décolletage."

My Verdict:

I started using the rosehip oil along with my moiturizer, but I found out it was a tad too rich for my skin. So, I use my moiturizer in the morning and only use the rosehip oil during the night (without my mouturizer). I totally love this product for a few reasons:

1) I have super hard-to-heal acne scars, but after using the rosehip oil, the scars heal very fast. I have old acne scars that have been with me for more than 5 years, and also new scars that have been there for few weeks to few months. I understand that it takes longer time for older scars to heal, so I was observing the newer scars I have. I must say, I've never seen my scars heal so fast in my life. From the first night I apply the rosehip oil to my scars healed, it took only about one week. I know some ladies out there might say "One week for scars to heal is too long", but I'm totally fine with this process. After using the rosehip oil for close to 2 weeks, I can proudly say that my scars has definitely lighten a lot! In fact, some of them is totally gone by now!

2) As mentioned ealier on, I have combination oily skin. Although I'm putting oil on my face, it doesn't make my face oiler. but instead, it helps to control the oil on my face. All the while I have to apply moiturizer to balance out the oil on my face (weird huh?). If I don't do so, my face will be super oily and have the uncomfortable-sticky feeling. ** I'm using Clinique Dramatic Different Moutirizing Gel

3) It made my face smoother. I was cleansing my face as usual one morning, and suddenly I realised that my face is much more smoother than usual. I'm totally loving the smoothness of my face whenever I'm cleansing it! Hahahahaha =P

I'll continue to observe my skin condition in weeks to come, to see will there be any breakouts. However, I'll say this is a product that worth invest to be part of you skincare routine.

**I tried to upload the pictures of the product but due to some error, I was unable to do so.

Beyond Veggie @ Secret Recipe

When Secret Recipe opened a branch in Tropicana Mall, it caught my eye immediately with their name - Beyond Veggie. This was the first time that I've ever came across a vegetarian restaurant by Secret Recipe. Though it caught my eye, but I wasn't really that eager to try it out. After all, I love to try vege meal, but has been disappointed way to many times. This restaurant just slipped through my mind, until one weekday after work, me and my mom ended up in Tropicana Mall. Not really sure where to dine in, we decided to give this Secret Recipe a try. After the first tryout, this would definitely be my usual place to dine in. So, I went back the second time with Joe. Unfortunately, I was too concentrate on my food and did not really take much picture of the surroudings and menu >.<

The deco and layout was simple. I like that. They designed one section of their restaurant with leaves and the whole thing scream very tropical to me.

During my first visit, me and my mom decided that we will share the food, as we both are not really that big eater. We had their Deep Fried Oyster Mushroom with Sesame and Coriander as starter and shared a bowl of their Red Yeast Noodles .

I love my mushroom a lot! And I totally love this dish. The mushroom is cripsy on the outside and it has the fragrance of the sesame. Squeeze some lime onto it, and you totally bring out the flavor of the mushroom and sesame.

Twice visiting the restaurant, I've ordered this same dish. Initially. I was not having much hope on this noddles dish, as the soup of a veggie I've had are either usually quite bland and tasteless and/or they are too oily. So, when the waiter served the noodles, without any hesitation I've asked for cili padi, just as precaution. How wrong could I have been! The soup was not even oily, neither was it bland! It was flavorful and it has the sweetness of the wolfberry that they cooked with the soup. It was delicious!!Not only that, they are definitely not stingy with their vegetables and mushrooms. They don't just give you normal canned button mushroom, it has enoki and oyster mushrooms in it, also another favourite of mine - cauliflower. After dinning out too much, I really dislike soups or broth that are made tasty from adding MSG or too many salt. That just totally unhealthy. So, that being said, I really am very taken into this dish, and I would say it definitely worth a try.

During my second visit with Joe, he ordered Carbonara with Shitake Mushroom, Snow Peas and Asparagus. I only took a bite and couldn't really comment much, but from that one bite I would say the carbonara is really creamy and delicious.

Birthday - Decanter, Seksyen 17

For the past few years I either spent my birthday having my final exams, out of the country or on a plane! This year..I spent my birthday falling sick - talk about being kinda unlucky! Though I'm sick, this would not stop me from celebrating my birthday, though it was just a simple yet sweet dinner.

Since I'm on leave but Joe is working, he decided that we would go out to celebrate my birthday over a nice dinner. It's a weekday, so we did not go far, but chose to go somewhere near - Decanter at Seksyen 17. I've been to this restaurant a couple of times, and I like the food there. They serve Western and Asian food, so the patrons have a wider range to choose from.

This time, we ordered their Mixed Grill (RM45) and share, since the waitress adviced it was for 2 person to share. It comes with grilled prawn, lamb, chicken and fish. Also, it was served with mashed potatoes with black pepper sauce and salad as their sides. It was not bad, but if you are a big eater or absolutely love your meat, then this would not be the ultimate dish for you. 2 reasons: first, the portion is enough for small eaters to share, and secondly, they serve one portion for each of the protein mentioned above.

Since I wasn't really hungry and was kinda worry that we wouldn't be able to finish the food, we decided that we'll order a main dish and some sides or soup. I'm a big time soup lover, so I ordered Oxtail Soup (RM10) without hesitation and Joe had Wild Mushroom Soup (RM9). I wasn't really into their Oxtail Soup, as I think Jake's Grill serves better version. I didn't really have that beefy-kinda taste when I had the soup. However, I would order their Wild Mushroom soup the next time I go there. Most of the time when I see Mushroom soup on a menu, I would never order that. That's simply because most of the time they taste pretty much like Campbell soup, and I never like the taste of it. This is different in Decanter. You can definitely taste the mushrooms in the soup, and it was strong, unlike some instant mushroom soup you get from the groceries.

L: Wild Mushroom Soup; R: Oxtail Soup

Normally, I would like to end my meal with a dessert, especially if it's a dinner. However, I've decided to skip dessert this time. Anyhow, I had a lovely dinner and recevied a surprise gift from Joe - Instant Camera from Fujifilm!!!

 Surprise birthday gift ^^

Also, I've received some gifts from some very lovely peeps!!

Top from cousin

Body Scrub from BFF

Last but not least, you can't have a birthday without a birthday cake!!

Cake from RT from cousin

Can't quite put my fingers on the cake flavor, and stupid me of not asking my cousin what flavor she bought for me. LOL!!! It has a hint of chocolate and coffee (if I'm correct) and I love the nutty flavors of the cake from the nuts on top.

Happy 27th birthday to myself!!!!!! ^^
