[Guest Post] Best Seafood Spots in Hawaii by Ella

14:06 becky-wong 0 Comments

Hawaii has a well-earned reputation for being a little slice of paradise on earth, due mainly to its gorgeous setting, unforgettable views, and warm climate. But if you're a seafood lover, there's an even better reason to choose Hawaii for your next vacation: the abundance of delicious fish, often caught that very day in the turquoise waters of the Pacific.

Ono, ahi, mahi mahi--these are just a few of the local delicacies you can expect to sample on your tour of the islands. But where are the best spots to chow down? While it's difficult to find a Hawaiian restaurant that doesn't turn out a good seafood dish (even the burger joints often feature a fish entrée), here's a rundown of the crème de la crème.

Paia Fish Market, Maui
This highly rated hot spot is known for being one of Willie Nelson's favorite hangouts when he visits Maui. Photos of him and a bevy of other celebs are pasted across every inch of the walls in the flagship restaurant, which is located in picturesque, laid-back Paia town. Offerings are centered around the fresh catch of the day--several varieties of local fish, prepared either grilled, sautéed in lemon butter, seasoned with Cajun spices, or blackened. Chicken and fish tacos are also available, with a smattering of pasta dishes and salads to round out the menu.

Other locations can be found on bustling Front Street in Lahaina, and Southside in Kihei. For a look at the full menu, visit their website.

Ono Seafood Products, Honolulu
Visitors to Hawaii's capital can enjoy great bargains on mouthwatering selections at this laid-back eatery, which functions as a sort of oasis in the busy city. Fresh and affordable, with a no-frills atmosphere, Ono Seafood Products gets high ratings on both Yelp and Trip Advisor
. First-timers should definitely sample the poke bowl, as it's a favorite with repeat visitors. To visit their Facebook page, click here.

Quinn's Almost By the Sea, Kailua-Kona
This charmingly named eatery also gets high marks for its casual atmosphere, not to mention its stunning location on the western shore of the Big Island. Even the pickiest eaters will find something to savor on the extensive menu, which always features a fresh catch of the day, fish tacos, and some of the best fish and chips you'll find in Hawaii. Quinn's is open daily from 11 am to 11 pm, making it one of the easiest spots to hit on your tour. To check out their menu, head over to their easily navigable website.

Lahaina Fish Co., Lahaina
A visit to the islands would not be complete without a stop in charming Lahaina town (don't be put off by the name, which means "cruel sun"), and Lahaina would not be the same without Front Street, where this delightful eatery can be found. Lahaina Fish Co. has it all: stellar views, a fabulous deck, and a menu laced with delicacies such as macadamia-crusted mahi mahi and coconut curry made with island fish. Bonus tip: If you enjoy a good rum every now and again, don't miss out on the mai-tais at this oceanfront gem! Check out their fun, eclectic menu here.

Hula Grill Waikiki, Waikiki
Located at the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort, this beachfront destination entices island-goers with tasty offerings from brunch to lunch to dinner. Enjoy oysters on the half shell, so-fresh-it's-almost-wriggling sashimi, harissa-roasted monchong, or herb-grilled opah--all while taking in a view of the ocean in which these delicacies so recently swam. Wash it all down with one of the Hula Grill's signature cocktails, crafted with the finest spirits and local ingredients. Live music is featured on certain nights; check the website to learn more.

Most travelers don't need an excuse to visit Hawaii, not even the ones who crave fine seafood at every meal. But it's nice to have another reason to seek out this uniquely beautiful portion of the globe nonetheless. Again, if you come across a spot that looks promising, don't pass it up simply because it doesn't appear on this list--Hawaii has too many wonderful seafood restaurants to name in a day, and the freshness can't be beat, no matter which corner of the islands you happen to be exploring. AT the end of the trip, you'll likely be able to come up with a list of your own. So enjoy the adventure, and bon appetit!

Bananabro @ Berjaya Times Square: It's A Malaysian Thing!

20:44 becky-wong 0 Comments

Food is something that many Malaysian lives for and most of the time, we would go the limit to hunt for good food. One of the many celebrated local delicacies is the banana leaf. Fragrant white rice generously drizzled with aromatic curry paired with 3-4 vegetable sides, it just leave me feeling satisfying both on my palate and stomach whenever I had my banana leaf.

Most of the banana leaf restaurants can be quite hot and stuffy due to the kitchen constantly frying and cooking the food. On top of this, you'd definitely walk out from the restaurant smelling like banana leaf. However, there's a new banana leaf restaurant in town that serves decent food minus the hot and sweat!

Opened in 5th March 2018, Bananabro is a new addition at Berjaya Times Square. Occupying the Lower Ground East entrance, Bananabro serves authentic banana leaf meals using only fresh ingredients with intense flavours. Taking inspiration from India's street, art and cultures, Bananabro elevates the dining experience of authentic southern region through modern and contemporary touches in their dishes and drinks.

Surrounded by glass windows, the interior of Bananabro is very cosy and spacious.

The Craving Set (RM 12.90). Basic banana leaf rice set consists of rice, 3 vegetable sides, rasam, yoghurt, papadum and 4 different curries to choose from. If one serving is not enough, feel free to ask for refill!

Fried Squid (RM 9.90). Usually I'd add on some other dishes, and one of them is fried squid. Springy squid with crispy aromatic batter.

Chicken 65 (RM 7.50). Instead of the entire fried chicken, I prefer Chicken 65. They have chopped up the chicken into smaller pieces, which is so much easier to eat and work best as a sharing option too!

Fried Chicken (RM 5.90). Alternatively, you can opt to have the entire juicy fried chicken to yourself.

Fried Tenggiri (RM 8.90).

Mutton of the Day (RM 9.90). Apart from the deep fried options, their Mutton of the Day is a must try too. Tender mutton pieces served in aromatic gravy, I actually went back the 2nd time and ordered it again.

Apart from banana leaf rice meals, Bananabro serves Nasi Lemak Fried Chicken (RM 11.90) too. Starting from 8:30am to 11:30pm you can enjoy your nasi lemak with tender juicy fried chicken and acar at the side.

Teh-Tarik Lawa - Cold (RM 4.90). Tea is a must have and somehow a perfect pairing when it comes to banana leaf. The Teh-Tarik Lawa is smooth to the taste and it's not too sweet.

Lassi (RM 6.90). Lassi is a popular traditional yoghurt-based drink from India and it's both cooling and refreshing to have, especially when you are having heavily-spiced food such as banana leaf. There are 4 different flavours to choose from - Original, Strawberry, Mango and Soursop.

Whenever it comes to modernizing traditional food or cuisine, I usually find them to have more misses than hits. However, Bananabro has definitely hit many marks when it comes to their food. If you are around KL or at Berjaya Times Square, do visit and give them a try. Also, if you have yet to try, go for their Mung Bean Curry!

Bananabro will be opening their 2nd outlet at Gardens Midvally by end of the year. Do lookout for their new outlet.

To know more updates on Bananabro, check out their Facebook and Instagram.
