Stacks @ SS15, Subang: Affordable Japanese Restaurant

Whenever you're in SS15 Subang area, you'll never run out of food options. From mamak to cafes, coffee to dessert, Korean to Chinese cuisine - they have it all. Recently, my husband and I drop-by a newly-opened Japanese restaurant named Stacks.

Stacks started their operation back in December 2022 and their vision is to provide affordable, fulfilling and innovative food for everyone. There have kept their menu very simple with your typical sushi selections, sashimi, and a few rice and noodles options.

When it comes to drink in a Japanese restaurant, green tea would be our go-to and this is my first time having Drip Coffee at a Japanese restaurant. Something very different. If you are not into bold flavours, the mild flavours of drip coffee might be for you. It is a good, simple pick-me-up over your lunch too.

We started our meal with some sushi, which is definitely a must have when I'm at a Japanese restaurant. The sushi was priced at RM1.90 and RM2.90per plate, depending on what you are ordering. Although the quality wasn't over-the-top good, it was pretty decent.

I was excited when I see the mountain of assorted seafood stacking on top of the rice. The Kaisen Don had a nice ratio of sashimi and rice, and I think the portion is small enough that you can order other dishes to share with your friends. On the other hand, I find the lemon slices weren't contributing much to the dish, as they were sliced too thin for us to be able to squeeze any juice to zest up the Kaisen Don. It would be nice to add some citrus note to balance out the richness of the dish.

The Sarang Burung Stacks was a first for me. Ultimately, they've given devil eggs a Japanese twist by topping the egg with mayonnaise with crab meat and prawn roe.

The Stacks Nasi Lemak Maki is their Ramadan special menu and it's only available during the month of Ramadhan starting from 23 March 2023. It's a nice fusion dish but the sambal was a bit too spicy. If you have low tolerance for spicy food, this might not be for you.

Salmon Sashimi is pretty much another must-have for many people when dining at a Japanese restaurant. Stacks did not disappoint with their Salmon Sashimi. The raw fish was fresh and had the right thickness.

If raw food is not your kind of thing, give the Chicken Paitan Ramen a try. This bowl of noodle soup is a nnice way to warm your stomach up.

What better way to end our meal with a cup of hot green tea to wash down all the food we had.

Overall, if you are looking for something simple and no-fuss, Stacks might be the spot for you in SS15, Subang.

Wood & Wheat @ Tropicana Avenue: Wood-Fired Asian Fusion Pizza

There is no doubt that pizza is one of the most popular foods in the world. Whether it's a pot-luck, house warming or a get-together event, pizza will always be a default go-to on the menu. Pizza is so versatile you could hardly go wrong with any toppings. Over the years, we've seen some quite crazy-flavoured pizzas such as the Durian Pizza, but one new player in Tropicana Avenue decided to take it to another level!

Wood & Wheat is a new player in the F&B scene in Tropicana Avenue. Owned by the same mind that started Good Blue Men, Wood & Wheat is here to bring wood-fired pizzas in Asian flavours.

Sitting in between Subway and Burger King, Wood & Wheat is a 2-storey pizza joint, where you'll be greeted with a kitchen of staff stretching pizza dough and putting them into a brick oven. Inspired by Asian flavours, Wood & Wheat has put a good twist of Asian twist into their pizzas - from Chinese Kam Heong to mamak Pasembur.

Kam Heong Royale (RM 38). One of my favourite pizzas at Wood & Wheat. Thin-crusted pizza topped with kam heong sauce and chicken bits that are beautifully spiced with 13 different types of herbs and spices.

Ever bite is just an explosion of flavours. On other hand, the Kam Heong Royale might be too spicy for you, if you have low tolerance in spicy food.

One other way to experience the pizzas at Wood & Wheat is to have it in Half Half (RM 42).

Fiery Masala (Left) | Rendang-Licious (Right). Fans of spices, these 2 flavours are not-to-be-missed.

The Fiery Masala hits all the right notes of a good masala dish with tender lamb slices.

Topped with beef meatballs, onions, chillies and homemade rendang sauce, the Rendang-Licious is another must-try for any true Malaysians.

The Pasembur (Left) | Thairiffic Tom Yum (Right).

The other favourite of mine at Wood & Wheat is The Pasembur. Generously topped with fried beancurds, papadom, shredded carrots, the slightly sweet Pasembur sauce goes very well with the doughy base of the pizza.

Thairiffic Tom Yum - the all-time favourite of Thai and a good choice for a not-so-spicy option, but still have a good amount of kick in the spices.

Tastebud Refresher (RM 4). Cleanse your palate with some refreshing crunchy cucumber before moving on to your next slice of pizza.

Ryan's  Nachos (RM 9). Thin and crunchy nachos served with creamy dipping sauce. These babies can be quite addictive.

Zesty Chicken Finger (RM 12) with garlic lemon sauce.

Minty Lemonade (RM 11) | Candy Lime (RM 11). A cup of cold and fizzy soda is just what you need to wash down the flavourful pizzas.

Keeping authenticity is important but is not a bad idea to throw in some creative twist once in a while too, especially when the outcome is finger-licking pizzas that are bursting with Asian flavours. The pizzas are carefully hand-stretched and put into a brick oven, which gives the dough a nice chewy texture with crispy edges.

On top of their Asian flavours, you can find your everyday Triple Cheese and Boring Margherita on their menu too. To keep their pizzas exciting, Wood & Wheat will be collaborating with different brand every month to create new and exciting pizzas flavours! A little birdie told us they are collaborating with Beard Brothers' BBQ in Tropicana Avenue, and it's no secret that Beard Brothers' BBQ serves one of the best barbecue in town!!!

Petztopia @ The Strand, Kota Damansara: A Pet-friendly Cafe that will Make Your day!

One of the many things that would make a pet lover happy is to visit a pet-friendly cafe where they can chill while their furry friends can have fun playing around. Though I don't own a pet (at the moment...), I love going to pet-friendly cafe, and one of them is Petztopia at The Strand Kota Damansara.

Location the same row as Dreamz Bakery, Petztopia is a pet-friendly cafe that started off as a pet's grooming centre. Your pet is due for a grooming session? Petztopia has professional and affordable pet's grooming services, where their stylist will make your pet look good in their furry coat starting from RM40! Petztopia provide boarding services too. Keep your pets with them while you are away from home, starting from RM30 per day.

While your pet is getting their coat done, enjoy some food and coffee at the cafe while waiting.

Pizza Margarita (RM 17.90). This slices of pizza topped with fresh dried tomato, Basil leaf, capsicum, Mozzarella and Oregano tomato sauce. All the pizzas at Petztopia are made to order so do expect to wait for a bit while they prepare your pizza.

Seafood Alio e Olio (RM 18.90). Spaghetti with prawn, squid ring and mussels sauteed with garlic, dry chili, black olives, cherry tomatoes and chopped Parsley. Not too oily, the spiciness of the spaghetti is just nice to awaken the palate.

Grilled Chicken Charcoal Bun Burger (RM 24.90). Grilled chicken marinated with BBQ sauce served with fried onion rings, cheese and mayonnaise. The chicken is very well marinated and I like the fact that they use actual chicken meat rather than minced chicken patties.

Chicken Roulade with Mash Potatoes (RM 20.90). Tender chicken thigh stuffed with chicken sausage meat and mushroom, served with garlic herb sauce. This is my favourite among all the dishes served that day. Not too heavy yet flavourful enough, if you are not too hungry, the chicken roulade is the dish to go for.

Uji Matcha Latte (RM 12 Hot | RM 13 Cold). The matcha latte has a nice balance of sweet and bitterness.

Sunday Mango Soda (RM 11). Sweet and fizzy, the Sunday Mango Soda is the perfect glass to have, especially during hot weather.

Coffee Latte (RM 11 Hot | RM 14 Cold). For coffee lovers, the Coffee Latte is not too bad. You can opt to pour in the extra latte if you want your stronger to be stronger; otherwise, the coffee ice cube would be sufficient.

Oh ya, did I mention that the coffee ice cubes are super cute?

Honey Blue Chai Latte (RM 11 Hot). On top of their menu, Petztopia has hidden menu too.  The Honey Blue Chai Latte, a simple combination of honey & milk, is one of their hidden menus. If you are not too sure what to order, why not let the kitchen or barista surprise with you what they have? You can also follow their social media to find out more on their daily hidden menu, as they will be posting photos on their Facebook and Instagram.

Petztopia might not be the fanciest cafe in town, neither have they had out-of-the-world menu; but when it comes to simple and comfort food, they certainly delivered. Regardless you own pets or not, the comfy ambiance of Petztopia is really a nice place for hang out. Plus, you'd never know what dogs you'll come across at the cafe!

In addition to these, Petztopia serves food for dogs too! You and your pet dog can enjoy a lovely day out at Petztopia. Also, if you are looking for a venue to celebrate your pet's special day, this will be a great place too!

As a dog lover himself, Jerry has 3 dogs at the cafe and they are really very friendly.

From pet's grooming to boarding, pet's merchandise and cafe, Petztopia is a one-stop solution. To know more about Petztopia updates, you can check out their Facebook and Instagram.

Row Six @ Setia City Mall: Reminiscing the Unique Nanyang Experience

Asia is the largest and most populous continent, and with its diversity is what drawn people from other continents to this part of the world. Being a massive continent, Asia has lots to offer and Southeast Asia is one of the many regions where travelers love to explore not just the colourful cultures, but also its delicacies.

Like me, if you enjoy exploring food from different cultures, then Row Six is probably a place that you want to drop by. With delicacies of different countries in Southeast Asia, Row Six is a reminiscent of "Nanyang" experience. You get to enjoy the tender Malaysian-style Satay, aromatic bowl of Pho, spicy yet satisfying Tomyam, while sipping on a glass of rich and aromatic Vietnamese coffee. To ensure everyone get to enjoy the authentic flavours of each cuisine, Row Six vigilantly prepared their food, even to the extent of making their own broth.

Chicken Satay (RM 16.95 - 6 sticks). When it comes to satay, I am really very picky. Most of the time, either the meat isn't well-marinated or it is too tough. The satay at Row Six hits all the right notes for me. The meat is well-marinated and very tender; and the nutty flavour of the peanut sauce is just perfect.

Oriental Taste Baguette (RM 15.99). Introduced by French during the colonial period, this traditional Vietnamese food is now one of the most popular sandwiches in the world. Unlike the traditional baguette, this has a thinner and airier crust with mango slice, chicken ham, pineapple slice with lime chili sauce, Chinese parsley and mixed veges. Not only the sweetness of the mango and pineapple work perfectly well with the saltiness of the ham, but it works as gravy to the banh mi too.

Pho (RM 21.95). Fresh rice noodles served in fragrant broth, herbs and beef slices. The broth has been simmered for 12 hours using beef bone. It is flavourful and packed with aromatics; and the beef slices were really super tender. I was quite surprised how good and comforting the bowl of Pho is.

Tomyam Goong with Rice & Satay (RM 24.95). If you love spicy food and especially tomyam, you'd definitely enjoy the Tomyam Goong. Row Six managed to strike a nice balance of aromatics in the tomyam with a hint of acidity, and spiciness that truly hits your face at the end.

It might be a tad too spicy, but I enjoyed every spoonful of it.

Nasi Ketuk with Chicken Rendang (RM 21.95). Each bite of the chicken rendang is rich, meaty and very comforting.

Nasi Ketuk with Seafood Sambal Petai (RM 25.95). If chicken rendang is not your cup of tea, try the Seafood Sambal Petai then. The mild spiciness of the sambal is very appetizing.

Vanilla Ice-cream with Tropical Fruit (RM 11.95). Cool your palate down with a bowl of icy dessert and fresh fruits.

Snow Fungus with Sea Coconut (RM 6.95). Cold desserts are not your thing? Go for the Snow Fungus with Sea Coconut then. I love the crunchiness of the snow fungus and the natural sweetness of the sea coconut. It is a very light dessert to wrap up your meal.

Mojito (RM 9.59). Lemon, peppermint, lime and lemongrass. This fizzy drink is very refreshing to have, especially to wash down all the delicious mains.

Mango Selasih with Cream (RM 11.95). Served with fresh mango cubes, this will definitely be a favourite to many mango lovers.

Tropical Thanh Long (RM 12.95). Ever wonder how would a combination of dragon fruit, banana and coconut taste like? It taste surprisingly good actually.

Vietnam Coffee - Cold (RM 6.95). One other thing that is famous in Vietnam is their coffee. Pour the hot water into the drip filter, and wait patiently for the hot water to extract all the flavours from the grounded coffee bean. The coffee is smooth, thick and aromatic yet not too sweet, despite the condensed milk in it.

Honestly speaking, I was a bit skeptical before going to Row Six, as I've been to restaurant/cafe similar to this but the food were only average. However, my thoughts definitely changed after trying out the food at Row Six. The flavours are really good, and I like how they have kept the authenticity and simplicity of the food without trying too hard to "modernize" it.
