Kuantan Trip - Beaches and Delicacies

After so many many many years, finally I stepped foot into Kuantan again - Joe's hometown! The first thing we arrived, I "kinda" force Joe to take me to the nearest beach - Teluk Chempedak.

It was a windy day - nice weather! Though you can't really see from the pictures, but I could  really feel that the monsoon is just round the corner - waves were hitting the shore and strong wind were blowing. Nevertheless, this did not stop the people to hang out and have some fun by the beach and/or in the water. There were some stalls by the side of the beach - ranging from food to accessories. Also, if you'd like, you could hang out by the eateries too - McDonalds, Starbucks and Chatime!

After enjoying the ocean breeze, which was deprived of me due to me currently staying in a city, my stomach started rumbling. We decided it's time to go grab our dinner before the queue started to pile up - the infamous Satay Zul ! They have2 floors, and we were lucky that we're still able to grab some seats despite the locals have already started pouring in.

I wanted to oder the rabbit satay (Arnab), unfortunately, they were sold out for the day. So, we ended up ordering some chicken and beef (Lembu).

 Satay Sauce

Chicken Satay

I really love the chicken satay! Compare to the ones that we have in KL or PJ area, theirs were marvelous! The main reason - without having any fat in between the meat BUT it wasn't dry at all! It was tender and has the smokiness that a satay should have. Usually you'd get a piece of fat in between of the meat on the skewers, so that the meat wouldn't get too dry during the bbq process. This is totally the opposite in Satay Zul.

Beef Stay

Compared to the chicken stay, the beef satay were a little tough for my liking. Personally, I'll still prefer their chicken satay.

Nasi Lemak

I tried the nasi lemak that Joe ordered, and I like the sambal a lot! With a little but of sweetness in the spicy sambal, and it totally gets you going non-stop. I did not try the rice nor the chicked, so couldn't comment much on it.

Bakso

I was tempted to try out the Bakso, but did not really like it. The meatballs were too mushy for my liking.

The next morning, Joe brought me to Sungai Lembing to try out the famous Toufu - I'm a really big toufu fan! We woke up kinda early (at least for me...) and took a 30 minutes drive to Sungai Lembing. I thought we were early, but when we were at the stalls, we were greeted by a long queue and busy stalls' owners.

Finally after a long long queue, we were still managed to grab our food. Once again I must say, we were REALLY REALLY REALLY lucky!!! We were literally the last customer to grab all the toufu, the lady boss actually told a guy behind us that they have JUST ran out of toufu for the day. *pheww*

I wanted to their curry laksa, but the person infront of us just took the last bowl. So, I had the same dish a Joe - Sungai Lembing Noodles.

Sungai Lembing Noodles

It's actually simple noodles with some black soya sauce and sprinkled with spring onions. Though is simple, but it's really delicious. The noodles they used weren't the kind of noodles you'll see in Wanton Mee or laksa - not the yellow-colored noodles that leave a Alkali taste in your mouth.

The toufu was also another simple dish, but same as the noodles - delicous! The toufu was silky smooth and the starch has added flavour this delicate ingredients. Their toufu was stuffed with minced meat, which added extra flavours and texture to it. The total cost of this meal - 2 noodles and toufu - is RM5.50... super cheap or what!!!!

After breakfast we took a stroll at the small, quite town of Sungai Lembing (didn't captured any photos though...), and headed back to Kuantan.

When we were out looking for our lunch, we came across this restaurant - Hai Peng. Sounds familiar? It's the kopitiam from Kemaman, and now they have a branch in Kuantan, opened and operated by their own family member.

Kaya Toast Bread

A must, at least for me, to try their toast bread whenever I'm in a kopitiam. The quality of the kaya (coconut custard) and how toasted the bread is, will affect how delicious it is. I like their toast bread -right amount of sweetness in the kaya, and the toast was crunchy enough. There are times, that you'll find the bread get over-toasted and it has that burnt-bitter taste to it.

Curry Chicken Nasi Lemak

I'm starting to think that Joe really loves nasi lemak alot! 2 days in a row - nasi lemak! The curry chicken was delicious. I had a spoonful of the curry - it has the heat, the frangrance of the santan (coconut milk), and I could taste the spices in the curry. Another dish that keeps you going non-stop.

Asam Laksa a.k.a Laksa

I actually wanted to order Laksa, or over there in Kuantan, they called it Curry Laksa; and when it say "Laksa", it is actually refering to "Asam Laksa". Confusing huh?! Nevertheless, this was a bowl of good laksa too. It was slightly different from the ones that you'd get in Penang.Tthough the broth was as flavourful, but personally, I find it's less acidic than the laksa in Penang - and I'd prefer this. I don't really fancy sourish or acidic dishes.

Joe brought me to this famous cendol shop in Kuantan - Cendol Air Putih. The place was packed with people enjoying their bowl of ice during the hot weather.

Ice Kacang a.k.a ABC

The Ice Kacang was not bad - the combination of syrup, condensed milk and gula melaka (Palm Sugar) was heavenly. It wasn't overly sweet, despite mixing all these 3 sweet ingredients into the nicely shaved ice.

Cendol

The coconut milk was flavourful and fragrant; the gula melaka (Palm Sugar) gave it a slight sweetness and the ice was shaved thinly - unlike at some places you'll still get chunks of ice here and there.

On our last day in Kuantan, I was still craving for Curry Laksa. Unfortunately, one of their famous shop was closed on Monday, so we had to find some alternatives. We ended up at Restaurant Seng Kong near to Joe's house. They had a few stalls selling different food, and finally I managed to have my Curry Laksa before we left Kuantan.

One thing I like about the curry laksa, is the noodles. It used the same noodles as the ones in Sungai Lembing, instead of the usual yellow noodles. You can choose what other dishes you like to add into your noodles. The broth was not too bad, but I think some might think is a little to salty.

I couldn't wait till the next time that I'm there. Beaches and delicacies!

HK KItchen @ Tropicana City Mall

I'm not too sure how new is this restaurant in Tropicana City Mall, at least for me, it is quite new - HK Kitchen. It is located at LG in the mall (where Churros used to be), opposite GNC and Eat 'N Run. Joe and I decided to give it a try.

The concept of the restaurant is simple Hong Kong cuisine. Though they have varieties from steamed rice to fusion macaroni, but they do not have an extesive menu.

Joe ordered their steamed rice and I had their macaroni:

Steamed Rice with Pork Ribs in Spicy Fragrant Garlic Sauce (RM 12)

One thing I must say, the actual steamed rice that came was a TOTAL different from their menu. We actually had to double check with the waiter if they have taken the wrong or served it to the wrong table. The portion is kinda small, especially if you are a guy. The rice were a tad too dry and I really hope they were abit more generous with the sauce on top of it. The sauce was not too bad - savory and a slight heat from the chilli, but I find the pork were a little tough for my liking. Overall, I would not say it's a bad dish, and I'd most probably re-visit the restaurant if I want something simple and fast.

Macaroni with Braised Minced Pork in Fresh Tomato Soup (RM 9.50)

Compared to the steamed rice, the portion of the macaroni was actually kinda big. Again, if you are a guy, you might find the portion just nice. I ordered this in a heart beat, because I fell in love with the Macaroni in beef broth from Fatspoon. I was looking forward to have that flavourful soup. Having this expectation, I was a let down a little - the soup was a but one note and it seems like is missing some flavours in it. However, the macaroni were well cooked and I love the eggs in the soup.

Iced Milk Tea (RM3.50) to go with our meal! Our total bill came to RM29.95. The pricing was average and there are some hits and missed with the food, but for a simple and quick meal, I wouldn't mind re-visiting the restaurant again.

Movie Review: The Internship

I've been a huge movie fan for centuries, but never tried to do a movie review. So, I'm gonna kick-off my very first movie review on "The Internship". Thanks to +Nuffnang Stickman, I received a pair of premiere invitation to watch the movie at TGV 1 Utama.

"The Internship" is the 2nd movie that Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson starring together, after "Wedding Crashers. So, before I go further talking about the movie, I'll just give you folks a summary of what the entire movie is about:

"2 watch middle-age salesman seek employment after being laid off when their employer went out of business. Both of them, neither being IT savvy nor other working skills, applied an internship at Google and got accepted for the internship. Both of them will have to compete with a bunch of young and smart interns who have the in-depth knowledge of IT, just to lay themselves a job in Google."

Despite the negative comments I've read on-line, I'd still say this is a funny and worth-watching movie. It is a very light comedy and I can really relate to the movie. Same as the characters played by Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, I do have people around me who are not so IT savvy and they really tend to say some silly things sometimes - just like the movie.

Apart from the comedy, I really love the messages that they want to convey through the movie - "Never give up, Live your dream, and you'll never know what surprises you'll get along the way". At the very least, this movie motivates me in this way.

On a side note, Google office is REALLY REALLY REALLY REALL SUPERB!!!!!! OMG!!!!!! You could see quite a few areas of the Google office in the movie, and I must say, no wonder Google has been rated one of THE BEST company to work for!

So, if you are free over the weekends, why not drop-by the cinemas and give this movie a chance.

MooGoo Love: Milky Wash

In one my of previous beauty post, I've mentioned that I've hopelessly fallen in love with MooGoo products. I'm going to talk about another product of this amazing brand in this post - Milky Wash. I've always shy away from using milk cleanser because they tend to cause further breakouts to my skin. Hence, I've been using gel cleansers from REN. Although it's really a good cleanser but I'm still wanting a milk cleanser for double cleanse purpose. After seeing the result of other MooGoo products, I've decided to give their milk cleanser a try.

Mooooooooooooooooo~~~~~~~

It is kinda watery for a milk cleanser. Personally, I would say 2-3 pumps of roughly a 20cents-coin-size would be sufficient to cleanse the whole face. Compare to some cleansers out in the market, it doesn't have a very fragrance smell (I'm so sooooooo glad it doesn't have...I totally hated it!), but a very mild milky scent (personally I think so... ^_^ ). 2 things made me a loyal fan to this milk cleanser:

1) My face looks so much clearer and fairier everytime after I cleanse my face, and I love how my skin brightens up after that.

2) It doesn't irritates my skin. I have tried milk cleanser of other brands, but at one point, it will be too rich for my skin and I'll start to have break-outs.

On top of all these, it is really a very economic cleanser - 500ml for RM59 - and this could last you for months. I have been using mine twice a day since 4-5 months ago, and I would not need to purchase another bottle for another 1-2 months, I suppose. To add on, you could also use this as a milk body wash too! Killing 2 birds in 1 stone - face and body! But I guess, the bottle would not have lasted this long if I've been using it as a body wash as well. =p

Lala Chong Seafood Restaurant @ Kayu Ara, Petaling Jaya

It has really been ages since we've been to Lala Chong Seafood Restaurant, and my parents decided to re-visit the restaurant again after so long. We arrived there early, and the place was not fully occupied yet - so this means, we were still able to find a good parking spot.

While waiting for our dishes to be served, we get to munch on some snacks.

Pickled Mangoes with Sour Plum and Chili Padi

This was my favourite appetizer of the night! I love the mixture of sweet and sour from the crunchy mangoes and sour plum, and the litted spiciness from the chili padi - it's so appetizing!

I did not tryout their nuts on the table, but I heard my family saying they were too salty.

Stir Fried Kangkung with Sambal Belacan

Stir Fried Kangkung with Sambal Belacan (RM20). I love sambal belacan! This is a must-order dish whenever I go. Their kangkung was stir fried to just nice, and the sambal belacan wasn't too salty. On the other hand, I only wish that this dish would be spicier -  it lacks the heat that a sambal belacan should have.

 Herbal Chicken Soup

The Herbal Chicken Soup (RM43) wasn't too bad. The soup was flavourful from the chinese herbs, and they have quite a few ingredients inside the soup - chicken (of course...), fish maw, sea cucumber, fresh and dried scallops. One downside of the soup, it was a little too salty for my taste, but my parents thought it was just nice. I'm not too sure does the saltiness came from the dried scallops or too much salt in the soup. Nevertheless, it was still a pot of delicious and flavorful soup.

Stir Fried Meehon with Lala

I did not order any rice to go with the dishes because I wanted to savour their Stir Fried Meehon with Lala (a.k.a clams) (RM25). The meehon was delicious by itself, and it doesn't need additional sauces to go with. I only wished they could have added more lala in the dish.

Salted Baked Fish

This was another star of the night too - Salted Baked Fish (RM37). They would cover up the fish with a thick layer of salt and baked it. This way, they were able to contain the moisture in the meat, so that it wouldn't get dried up during the baking process; also, the salt actually added flavors to the dish. It's a simple yet flavorful dish. They actually served the dish with a plate of lime and garlic sauce for you to go with the fish, but I still prefer to enjoy this dish as it is. I don't really enjoy my fish other than steaming it, because they usually gets too dry; but this....I totally love it!

 Salted Egg Crab

THE STAR of the night - Salted Egg Crab (RM108). I don't really fancy much about salted egg crab, as most of the restaurant kinda screw this dish up. Though this wasn't the best salted egg crab I've eaten, but it's worth the mention still. The crabs were nicely covered by the fragrant salted egg, and you could taste the salted egg with every bite.

All in all, it was a satisfying dinner and our bill came to RM308.15 (including the snacks and drinks and taxes) for 8 pax.

Beauty Must Have: Part II - A Love Affair with MooGoo

MooGoo came into my life just end of last year, and I have been hearing positive remarks on their products. It is an Australian brand. I've tried out some of their products, which I'll talk about in my future posts, and now I'm totally in love with their Acne Cleansing Cream. I have been battling with acne problems for years, and it would get worsen during my menstrual period. However, after I've started using their Acne Cleansing Cream, things have changed for me!

I like their packaging - it comes in a milk-carton-like box - so cute! You would have to open the box from the top, like how you would open your milk carton.

"MooGoo is an Australian company that makes a range of natural, safe products with effective active ingredients designed for people with skin and scalp problems." Guess how their products came about! It was made when their founder adapted a cream used in dairy farms to help a family member with a skin problem.

The cream might look heavy or oily, but its the other way round. It gets absorp into the skin very fast and it doesn't leave the heavy sticky feeling on your skin. I started only using the cream aroud my jaw-line area, since that's where I have the most acne problem. My acne started to clear up after a few application, and I'm not having any acne problem even I'm menstruating! Seriously, not even a bump of acne or pimple on my face ever since I started using this. The cream totally keep my acne condition under control, and now I do not have to fear when my menstrual is near. On top of all these goodness in a bottle, you do not need to apply a huge amount of cream on the face - the amount in the photo above is already sufficient for me to apply on my whole face.

I really strongly recommend anyone who is having acne or pimples issues to tryout this cream. In fact, I would recomment MooGoo to anyone in a heart beat! If anyone have a holy grail in their skincare routine, I've found my ultimate holy grail - MooGoo Skincare!

You can find their products in Caring Pharmacy and some of the Watsons Pharmacy. Sadly, in Malaysia, we do not bring in their whole range of products. Hence, for anyone of you that would like to browse through their entire range or purchase on-line, please go to their website:

http://www.moogoo.com.au/

From their Australia website, you can actually link to their Malaysia webpage and have a look on the range that we are currently selling in Malaysia - http://moogoo.my/

P/s: I sincerely do hope that this post of mine will be able to solve your acne/pimples problem!

Dao Kia @ Tropicana City Mall

Recently a new shop was opened in Tropicana City Mall at the LG floor - Dao Kia. I am a huge fan of soy - regardless dessert or drinks! I couldn't pass-by this shop and not walk in to try it out!

Basically, they have 3 main products - Soy Milk, Soy Pudding and Soy Cakes. Me and Joe decided to tryout their Original Soy and Japanese Green Tea soy milk, and I also added one of their Crispy Peanut soy cake.

I have the Original Soy, and it was really nice. Unlike some soy milk, which there only thing you can taste is the amount of sugar they've added inside; whereas in Dao Kia , you can taste the flavor of the soy in the beverage. Joe had their Japanese Green Tea Soy Milk. I tried some of his. Apart from the soy flavor, you could actually taste the green tea in it. If there's one tiny little flaw of the shop, I wish there were different level of sweetness for me to choose from. I find it a tad too sweet for my taste.

The cake was actually a little dry, but I guess they purposely prepared it in a more healthier way. I totally love the peanuts inside the cake! They were chunky at the right size and wasn't too sweet. If I wasn't too full, I would have bought another piece of this.

**For the pricing, kindly refer to the photos above. I tried to take the pricing as clear as possible in the photos... ^__^

A small little note, I know now is the fasting/Ramadhan month and Raya is just round the corner, you peeps must be enjoying all the buka puasa food! But don't forget to eat healthy too!!
