Muar - Another Food Paradise

It has been quite a long time since I've been back to Muar - a small little town where I grew up with tons of warm-hearted people. Since it is a small town, Muar doesn't really have much entertainment, compare to Malacca which is about 45 minutes drive from Muar. However, there's one thing about this place that attracted tourists to visit - Food! Way before they have started the Visit Muar campaign, people from other states have been pouring in over the weekends or holidays, and most of them are there to hunt for food. You can practically stuff yourself from morning till night!

We went back to Muar last weekend, in order to pay respect to my grandfather. We arrived early in the morning, and right after that.... we started to hunt for food! I recalled a hawker centre that I used to visit during my school days, but have not been there for many years - Coconut Garden. So, I decided to bring +chOo uEi (Joe) there to tryout their food. I love their Pan Mee, or in Muar, we called or "Mee Pok" - means thin noodles.

It was a simple dish - some noodles with few slices of fish paste and Char Siew (roast pork) and vegetables. It's not a fancy dish, but what makes it so delicious is the noodles and chillie in that one single bowl. The noodles had a nice and springy texture to it and flavorful by itself. However, by adding in the chillie, it brings the whole bowl into another level.

Instead of the noodles, Joe wanted to have rice for lunch, so I've ordered him a the Meat with Pork Innards Soup and Yam Rice. I tasted the soup for a bit, it was a little bland and abit too oily. I had better in some stalls in Muar (which hopefull will soon be posted in my blog!). I did not try the rice so couldn't comment much on it.

After getting some rest, we were out and about in the town area and decided to grab some food again. We went to Muar famous food street to find some delicacies. It's not a very long street, but is a short street that have food stalls both side of the road from one end to the other. On top of that, they have those old school kopitiam a.k.a coffee shop selling food too! On weekends, this place is super heavy with traffic and you can see people at every stalls - buying and eating.

We went to one of the kopitiam and started ordering our food and drinks.

We were there initially to have the satay, but ended up ordering quite a few dishes! LOL!

The satay was just ok, but this is one of the few places in Muar that you can get "Pig Intestine Satay", and their intestine was really nice!

The pork satay was average, and the meat was a bit too tough. I would prefer it to be a little fatty and tender.

Another must-have food in Muar is the Fried Oyster with Eggs. Compare to the ones selling in Petaling Jaya or Kuala Lumpur, which are fried to crunchy; the ones in Muar are more starchy. It's kinda like omelette with oyster in it and chillie. Although it doesn't have much of a crunchy texture, but the chillie add extra flavour to the dish. We had requested the uncle not to add too much starch in it, as we prefer it less starchy.

The Wanton Noodles was also average. The noodles were kinda starchy and did not have that springy texture to it. I have better Wanton Noodles in Muar.

Another place that we used to visit a lot is a restaurant that's famous for their Snakehead Noodles - Ting Ting Restaurant. It is out of Muar town area, and be sure to be there early. Or else, be prepared to wait for quite a bit for your dinner.

My favourite dish of all time - Stir Fried Sweet Potato Seedling with Belacan! Vegetables were cooked perfectly and the belacan wasn't too over-powering.

Their Stir Fried Chicken in Kong Po Style with Deep Fried Yam Ring was also another delicacies. The chicken were flavourful and the yam ring wasn't crsipy but not greasy.

Finally here comes the main star of the night - Snakehead Noodles! It's actually a simple dish, but the fish fillet was cooked to perfection and the soup was flavourful with the salted vegetables in it.

This is another snakehead dish - Deep Fried Snakehead with Tomato Sauce. I wasn't really a big fan of tomato-base food, but the deep fried fish fillet was not too bad. The batter was seasoned well and I could actually eat it just like that, without needing to go with the tomato sauce.

It was my first time having this dish - Deep Friend Pumpkin with Salted Egg. I totally love this! The sweetness of the pumpkin and the saltiness of the salted egg was totally perfect combination. Although it wasn't fried to crunchy, but I can totally forgive this with the salted egg in the batter. =p

The total bill of the night came to RM68 for 6 people with 5 dishes! I'll say it wasn't an expensive dinner, considering we have 2 fish dishes! *burrrrrrrppppppppp*

The Moon Bar @ Bukit Damansara

Usually there's nothing much to talk about bar food, as they normally are just your typical "bar-kind" of food. However, in The Moon Bar it is the opposite. I had the chance to try out their dishes in one of Nuffnang's Tastebuddies outing. The Moon Bar started business roughly about 10 months ago, and had their soft launch in 24th August 2012.

When I walked into the bar, the first thing that I noticed was the live band playing in the bar. I always like live band performing, but I think the music is a bit too loud if you wish to do some catching up with friends. So, if you want to have some chit-chat session and yet still be able to enjoy the music, you can always opt for the outdoor seats of the bar.

To avoid us from dying of hunger, the food were served about the same time.

Roast Pork Belly Skewer + Black Pepper Lamb Parcels

The Roast Pork Belly was flavorful. The pork was crunchy and juicy at the same time; the grilled tomatoes and onions added some acidity and sweetness into the dish, which make me can't stop eating it. How I wished I could have all the skewers to myself.

I was a little worried when I heard the name Black Pepper Lamb Parcels, as I had too many unpleasant "peppery" experience when a dish was prepared with black pepper. However, this lamb parcels were otherwise. The wanton skin was fried to crisp (without the greasiness, of course), and the lamb was seasoned just nice, that you can taste a little heat from the pepper but not over-powering.

Bah Kut Teh a.k.a Herbal Soup with Pork

Just in case you thought you have read wrongly or your eyes were playing tricks with you - NO! You were not! You "read" my loud and clear - they serve Bah Kut Teh a.k.a Herbal Soupt with Pork. Never once in my life I thought I'll be having this dish serve in a bar. The soup was not too bad, but I would like to taste a little more of that chinese herbs in the soup.

Hokkien Noodles with Fried Pork Fat

Another surprise you'll find in The Moon Bar - Hokkien Noodles a.k.a Hokkien Mee. The taste of the noodles wasn't too bad, and I kinda like the fried pork fat - Chu Yau Cha. Compare to some of the hawker stalls out there, where the fat was kinda dark in color, the ones in The Moon Bar were different. It still have the crispy texture but minus the greasy taste.

Sri Lankan Spicy Wild Boar Varuval

I love my food spicy and I couldn't wait to try out the varuval. FYI - in their menu it stated 'Sri Lankan Spicy Mutton Varuval". Although it says "spicy" in the menu, you don't really feel it from the start. The heat starts to hit you after a while. It wasn't a very aggresive, but more to a subtle spicy - whereby, you will definitely feel the heat at the back of your throat but not so that you will be scrambling for a glass of water. However, for you peeps who have lower tolerance in spicy food - please make sure you have a glass of water, or better, a glass of milk ready. The wild boar was not bad, but I hope it was slightly more tender.

Curry Pork

Another spicy food of the night! Same as the varuval, the spiciness wasn't too aggresive, but still get your glass of water ready. Some of the bloggers actually thought that the curry was spicier than the varuval. So....beware!! LOL!!!

Basmati Rice

We had some basmati rice to go with the dishes that night. I would totally love the rice and finished the whole bowl...unfortunately, it was a tad too salty.

We were offered some cocktails while enjoying the live band performing in the bar. One of the best way to relax is to sit back + have some drinks + listening to awesome band performing. Although the outing was on a Sunday night (which..most of us would have to endure the Monday blues, unfortunately), but I think we did relax and had quite some fun that night. =)

**The operation hours of the bar are as follow:

Betty's Midwest Kitchen @ Aman Suria

As I was going through my Facebook photos, I came across some food photos that I took some time ago while dining out in Aman Suria - Betty's Midwest Kitchen. The concept of the restaurant is authentic American food, and they do serve pork. So, for all the Muslim friends out there - sorry~~~

They menu is quite complete with varieties - from burgers to ribs to sandwiches and many more. Throughout my few visits to the restaurant, I have 3 favourite:

Juicy Lucy - RM15

It is a burger with melted cheese core inside the grilled beef and pork pattie, lettuce, tomato and onion relish served on a basket of fries. It might look kinda small from the photo, but the pattie was really quite thick. I never fancy the patties from the local fast-food chain - they are all dry and some are just simply tasteless. The patties in Betty's are juicy, especially their Juicy Lucy! One bite on the pattie and I could see the cheese oozing out *sinful*!

You can totally see the thickness of the pattie...and........CHEESE!!!!! I know it is so sinful, but....I just can't resist cheese. I'm seriously thinking, whoever invented cheese - he/she must be a genius! HAHHHAHAHAHA!
Pulled-Pork  - RM12
Shredded or 'pulled' pork which has been slow-roasted and braised in their special sauce in-between a burger bun, served with their house coleslaw and fries. Another favourite of mine! The meat was tender and once again...juicy, and the glaze on the meat was flavourful without any add-ons ketchup! You know that you have an excellent yummy-licious burger when you don't need to add in extra ketchup into it!
"Dog Food" - RM10
What?!!! Dog Food?!!!!!!!!!! *wink*
Tadahhh!!!!!! Fries drenched in gravy, topped with cheese and oven cooked. This is heavenly-taste!!! Most probably, because I'm a cheese-freak and a potatoes-freak!!!!! This is a must order whenver I'm there, and I seriously think I can just finish the whole plate or maybe 2 plates....all by myself! LOL!! It was cheesy and best consume when it's hot!! OMG....I'm getting hungry just by looking at this photo! LOL!!
They do not have much seats in the restaurant, hence, it would be best to make reservation if you are going in a big group. Please bear in mind, if you have made reservation, please make sure everyone of you come on time - they would not sit you down, if most of the people in the group are not there yet (that's what my brother told me....).

Melbourne Peking Duck at Bangsar, Jalan Telawi

Eversince I have Peking duck in Dynasty Hotel many year ago, I've been searching for places that could prepare delicious Peking duck. Unfortunately, many of them have failed - either they have sliced the skin too thick (you can even see the meat sticking to the skin), or the duck skin wasn't crispy enough. I was introduce to Melbourne Peking Duck in Bangsar by my mom. She's working in one of the law firm near the restaurant, and has suggested that we should go try it out - since she's heard quite a few good reviews for the restaurant. I think I've found my duck, as far as I'm concern.^^

It was located in Jalan Telawi 3 (address at bottom of the post), right above a vegetarian restaurant named Nature's Vegetarian. I like all the "Quacks" on the staircase - cute!

Apart from their ala carte, they have 2 options of set menu:

We've decided to order their Set 2 (as there were 6 of us), and add on some other dishes from their menu. While waiting for our food, we were served with acar-acar a.k.a pickled vegetables. The acar-acar was not too bad, though I would prefer them to be a bit more spicy. However, the vegetables had a nice crunch to it.

The food was served quite fast, even though it was during the peak dinner hour.

We have some spring onions, cucumbers and sweet sauce to with with the duck wrap. Next, here comes our main dish of the night - whole Peking duck! I always like it when they slice up the skin table-side.

2 choices for you to choose - with a little bit of meat or just the crispy skin!

Crispy skin with a little bit of meat

Crispy Duck Skin ^_^

We had requested the waitress to save us both the drumstick, and you know what....they were soooooo juicy!

P/s: sorry for not putting up the wrapped duck skin - the qualities of the photos were too bad ='(

Along with the set, it came with a fried rice too. The rice was fried with the remaining meat that was on the duck earlier on. It was delicious and it has the fragrance of the duck in the rice.

Just in case the dishes were not enough to feed 6 people, we've order some other dishes too:

Fried Thai Style Seafood Toufu

Frankly, I couldn't care much about the toufu. Personally, it felt it was just so-so and nothing special about it.

Fried Koay Tiau

Another dish that did not leave any big impact on me. It was not too bad, but was a bit too oily for my liking. Plus, I think I prefer my fried koay tiau with sweet sauce - the Muar style!!! *weird*? lol

Other than the duck itself and the fried rice, another highlight on the night was the Meehon Soup with Duck and Salted Vegetables. It was super duper delicious! As mentioned earlier, the soup that came with the set is the same as the meehom soup. BUT....BUT...BUT!!!!!!!! The bowl that we ordered seperately was totally different from the complimentary ones! By adding in the duck meat (lots and lots of meat....) into the soup, it added extra flavours and brought the soup to a whole new higher level. It was more savory and tastier! I couldn't help myself but to finish my whole bowl of meehon. Mind you, I was too full to even take another bite before I tasted the meehon soup!

MY!!! ALL MY!!!!!!! *slurpssssssssssssss*

Although there were some hits and misses, it is still a good place to get some decent Peking duck. ^_^
