After the 1st Tasebuddies gathering organized by +Nuffnang Stickman having Kelatanese cuisine, we had our 2nd outing at a newly open restaurant in Sungai Buloh - Xiao Lao Wang Hotpot 小捞王. The restaurant was opened just a few months ago, and is own by the same group who owns Kissaten and Lammeeya. It was a challenge to find the place, but eventually we managed to get there.

Normally you would not associate steamboat with lunch, as it really takes a little bit extra time to consume the food. However, in Xiao Lao Wang Hotpot 小捞王, you could enjoy a delicious steamboat for lunch. They have a lunch menu whereby the hotpot is served with all the ingredients inside. All you need to do is to turn on the fire and wait for 10 minutes for the food to cook, and you are good to dig in after that. Talk about hassle free lunch!

Lunch hotpot

The pricing of the lunch hotpot range from RM20.80 (1-2 pax) to RM62.80 (6-8 pax). They really have lots of varieties - greens, toufu, mushrooms, pork and prawns. They used tripe as the base of their soup, and they have 2 varieties - original and the other added with salmon head. Our first hotpot was the original soup and it was super flavorful! Usually the soup tend to be very peppery, and you won't be able to taste anything after that. On the other hand, in Xiao Lao Wang it's the other way round.

Before we started to sink our teeth into the food, we had a demo from one of the partner - mix and match all the sauces and condiments! Did I mention that they have varieties these? You just need to pay an extra of RM0.50, and you'll be able to customise your own sauces.

We had 4 different type of sauces to pair with our food:

Version 1

Version 2 - added in sesame!

Version 3

Version 4

Finally the food are ready to eat! It cooked really fast and the soup was really flavorful.

The sotong ball was springy

Have you ever tried putting in lunheon meat a.k.a cold cut into a hotpot? If you've never tried that, maybe you should - it was delicious as the meat will absorb the soup, and you'll that the fragrance of fried meat and the essense of the soup in the meat.

We had a 2nd hotpot - which was boiled with deep fried salmon head. The fish head added extra flavor into the soup, and the tomatoes in it added a hint of acidity which bring the flavor to another level.

I got the eye!! YAY!! Looks scary huh?? LOL! They owner has also generously ordered us a lot more of food to go with the hotpot:

The one on the left is made of tendon and the one of the right is made of mushroom. They hand-made all of these ingredients back in their kitchen, and my favourite is the Mushroom Ball.

 Fried beancurd a.k.a "Fu Chok"

Scallops, Frozen Tofu, Pork and Oysters
Fried Rice Cakes

Apart from the hotpot, we tried their mouth-watering claypot rice with blood sausage and pork. Visually it was beautiful - green from the spring onions, yellow from the ginger, red from the pork and black from the blood sausages. Flavor wise, it was excellent too! I especially like the side where the rice was a bit burnt, but you get the texture from the crispy rice.

At the end of the meal, we added in a bowl of white rice. Why? To make porridge! Thou shall not waste, isn't it? So, instead of letting the soup go to waste, we made a bowl of aromatic porridge out of it!

Before we called it a day (for lunch), we had some chilled snow beer to cool ourself down.
The waiter pouring chilled Guinness (my fav!)

Look at that thin layer of ice!!!

Overall, it was a delicious and satisfying lunch. They are open from Monday to Sunday from 12pm-3pm and 6pm -11pm.
