Papasan Canteen @ Kuchai Lama: Creative Japanese Cuisine!

What is your favourite childhood moment?

One of my fondest memories as a child was going around places to hunt for delicacies and trying out new cuisine. It was so fun and even now as a grown up, I still enjoy exploring places for food. One of my recent discoveries has to be Papasan Canteen at Kuchai Lama - a canteen-concept cafe serving creative Japanese food.

Inspired by the word Mamasan, Papasan Canteen hope to this little space of theirs will bring joy to their customers.

Simple canteen-like tables and chairs, Papasan Canteen gives out a very welcoming vibe.

One of the highlights, or I should say must try at Papasan Canteen is their tea selections. Growing up with my grandparents, I started drinking tea at a very young age, thanks to my late grandfather who was a tea lover. Seeing how he would patiently made himself a pot of tea every day, I came to learn there are so much knowledge in making a pot of tea. At Papasan Canteen, they have varieties of tea, and if you like to know more you are more than welcome to talk to their friendly boss, Zac.

Papasan Roll (RM 24). Salmon maki with Foie Gras, crab meat, Tobiko & garlic mayo. Foie gras and salmon maki sounded weird at first, but the creaminess of the foie gras elevated the flavours of the entire dish.

Omu Curry Rice (RM 18). Japanese rice topped with omelette and juicy fried chicken served with rich and aromatic Japanese curry. The fried chicken was really addictive but the sadly the omelette was a tad overcooked and didn't have the creamy runny yolk.

Bili-Bara-Don (RM 24). For a sashimi and poke lover, I was super excited when I saw the Bili-Bara-Don from Papasan Canteen. A bowl of sushi rice generously topped with salmon chunks, cucumber, tamago, raddish, and Tabiko fish roe. You can either enjoy the don as it is, or squeeze in some lime to brighten up the dish. For me, I love having it both ways!

Kalai-Kalai Udon (RM 16). Spicy dry udon with minced chicken topped with Bonito flakes, Onsen egg and lime. This is a truly amazing dish at Papasan Canteen. Why I said so? Inspired by Chili Pan Mee, the udon tasted very much like Asam Laksa!!!! My friends and I got so curious and started to "examine" the bowl trying to figure out why. According to Zac, they have added ginger lily into the dish, and that could be the reason why it tasted very much like Asam Laksa. Regardless, this is one of the MUST ORDER at Papasan Canteen!

Truffle Oil Olio (RM 14). The fragrance of truffle oil plus the earthiness of the mushrooms, the Truffle Oil Olio is irresistible!

Dogstars' Chicken Sausage Bun with Fries (RM 16). Dogstar is a local brand and you can get your locally-made sausages at Papasan Canteen with a Japanese twist.

Cafe Latte - Hot (RM 9). House blend specially customized using 100% Arabica coffee bean.

Iced Matcha (RM 12). If you prefer strong matcha flavours, this might not be what you are looking for. However, I like the subtle flavours of matcha.

Signature Tangerine Plum (RM 10). Sweet, sour and minty, the Signature Tangerine Plum is a perfect thirst quencher.

Let's Fall In Love (RM 18). Dragon fruit with banana and yoghurt. All of my favourite fruits in a jar, what not to love?!

House Cold Brew Iced Tea (RM 12 - RM 25). Ever since I've had cold brew iced tea at Leaf Lohas, I've fallen in love with this refreshing drink.

Homemade Black Sesame Ice Cream. Nutty flavours of the black sesame, total yum!

Homemade Wasabi Ice Cream. If you like savoury-sweet dessert, go for the Wasabi Ice Cream!

Been going around places to hunt for delicious food that worth value and I'm very happy that I've found Papasan Canteen. You won't find fancy dishes at Papasan Canteen, but you'll be getting varieties of simple hearty food that have been meticulously thought out.

Getting parking around the area is really challenging but you can either park at the food court next door or up the road and walk your way down.

Upperhouse Kitchen & Dessert Bar @ Jalan Telawi, Bangsar

It has been some time since I last went to Bangsar, and when I went back there weeks ago, I was surprised to see quite a few new shops around the area. One of them is a dessert bar named Upperhouse Kitchen & Dessert Bar.

Upperhouse Kitchen & Dessert Bar is located on the 1st floor along Jalan Telawi 3, opposite Beato Steakhouse. It is a very simple and pretty spacious place.

The artwork on the wall is a nice spot to take photos, plus the natural sunlight shining through the windows; it is perfect an OOTD spot! The owner of the dessert bar is a mother herself, so she understands how challenging it can by to bring kids around when eating out. With this in mind, she has specially created a kid-friendly space for the little ones to play, and also a baby changing station for moms. Honestly, I think this is by far the most baby-friendly cafe I've ever been!

No.15 Spiced Chicken Drumettes (RM 20) serves with lime salt and lime aioli.

Well marinated succulent drumettes with golden crispy skin - a perfect appetizer to have.

Schnitzel Upperhouse Style (RM 25). No.15 chicken, caramelized apples and strawberry salad. Just like the drumettes, the chicken schnitzel is another succulent fried chicken dish not to be missed. I had my doubts when I saw the caramelized apples, but the sweetness of the apples goes very well with the chicken, and the salad definitely brightens up the entire dish.

Cacao Ravioli (RM 34). First thing that came to my mind was "Oh, squid ink ravioli!" It turned out the ravioli were made of cacao powder filled with forest mushroom, capsicum sauce and cheese.

The cacao flavours were barely there, but I love the rich and earthy fillings, and the smooth, creamy capsicum sauce is a total yum! The Cacao Ravioli is definitely something I'll order again when I'm back at the dessert bar.

Fruit Toast - Set of 3 (RM 23). Homemade sourdough spread with 100% homemade cashew butter sauce. From left to right:

> Spiced Pineapple, Orange, Hazelnut, Basil
> Strawberries, Chocolate Crumbs, Mint
> Banana, Salted Caramel, Popcorn

The toasts are very pretty looking from all the fresh fruits. Compared to the usual white bread, sourdough has more chewy texture with a crispy crust. If you area a fan of fluffy bread, this might not be what you are looking for. Otherwise, the Fruit Toast is still a nice dessert to have.

Talk about desserts, the pastry chef at Upperhouse Kitchen & Dessert Bar has been professionally-and worked with a number of renowned Top 50 Best Restaurants in The World. The plating desserts are something worth looking forward to at Upperhouse Kitchen & Dessert Bar.

Lemon (RM 22). Lemon curd, Vanilla, Lavender, Raspberry, and Coconut Ice Cream. The tartness of the lemon flavours are nicely carried throughout the dish, yet not over-powering. Sometimes you don't need a heavy dessert to complete your meal, but something as light as Lemon can be very satisfying too.

Carrot (RM 20). Walnut, Greek Yoghurt, Honeycomb, Burnt Honey Ice Cream. For something heavier, the Carrot would make a good choice. The burnt honey ice cream on the place was my favourite!

Mille-Feuille (RM 24). Puff pastry, Orange Milk Chocolate Mousse, Pineapple, Almond, and Hay Ice Cream. The puff pastry might not be the flakiest ones I've had but it's still not too bad overall.

From left to right:

Babyccino (RM 5).
Hot Choco (RM 10).

For photo purposes, these cones would definitely look good. Personally, I'm not a fan of them as it leak very easily from the bottom of the cone.

Kombucha Mocktail - Raspberry, Lemon (RM 11). Kombucha is fermented, lightly effervescent sweetened black or green tea drinks that are commonly consumed for health benefits. I have kombucha once and it wasn't pleasant experience. I guessed the ones I had was overly fermented and it got too acidic with an unpleasant after-taste.

On the other hand, I enjoyed the kombucha at Upperhouse Kitchen & Dessert Bar. The kombucha was fermented at the dessert bar and it had a nice balance of sweet and sour, with a hint of aromatic tea flavours. By adding fresh fruits such as raspberries and lemons, it gives the drink a bright and refreshing flavours.

Located along Jalan Telawi 3, it can be very challenging to get a parking space but you can always park at Bangsar Village nearby and walk over the Upperhouse Kitchen & Dessert Bar. From the main dishes to desserts, Upperhouse has put a lot of thoughts and effort into their menu. If you are looking for a place to enjoy nice hot food and desserts at the same time, Upperhouse Kitchen & Bar will be a good choice. If you are a mom with kids, I'd say this is a perfect place for you!
